Northern Regional Gathering

Northern Regional Gathering
Wai Ora Lakeside Spa & Resort
16th - 17th March 2013

This past weekend the Rotorua Group of AAPNZ hosted the Northern Regional Gathering at the luxurious Wai Ora Lakeside Spa & Resort.

The day kicked off with a welcome from the Deputy Mayor of Rotorua Mr Trevor Maxwell.

He along with the lovely Elaine MacFarlane and our very own Beryl Harris led us on an appropriate rendition of Pokarekareana as we were very close to the site where Hinemoa made her legendary swim across Lake Rotorua to Mokoia Island to her beloved Tutanekai.

Kicking off the first of our presenters was Cathy Cooney.

From 2001 until 2012 Cathy was the Chief Executive of the Lakes District Health Board.  As she told her journey from the beginning to the present she shared

Cathy's message was: have a career plan; be courageous - if you believe in what you are doing and are passionate about it you will go far.  For any career - preparation and learning are imperative.
Soar like an eagle.

Kathryn Overall, Engage Communications - spoke to us after lunch on the use of social media as a marketing/promotions tool.  Making meaningful online connections whether through your own website and/or Facebook.  Kathryn told us to "jump on the learning curve - your willingness to learn and grow and keep learning and growing in your greatest asset".
Create opportunities to let people know about us and our organisation  - we should have an AAPNZ Facebook page as a starting point the use blogs, twitter, linkedin etc as platforms to grow our membership from.  We use these media tools to build relationships, to be helpful and to show that professional administrators are an interesting and worthwhile group.
"Power sits with those people/organisations who can grow valuable communication relationships".
Check out www.drivesocial.co.nz for hints and ideas on improving your social networks.  One tip from kathryn - Don't use your personal profile on business Facebook pages.

Our last speaker on Saturday was Carol Bannister, Careem - as always an inspirational speaker on how to dress for the occasion and how to make something out of very little.  We had a lovely time trying on new(used) clothes which some members bought to extend their wardrobes ready for winter.

Beryl Harris added a jacket which looked as though it had been deliberately made for the dress she was wearing - how classy!

Alexis Lewgor didn't mind showing off the different layers as she paraded in front of the audience.

Anita Galland alwasy looks stylish - this was her "casual look"

Mary presented Carol with a bunch of flowers as a thank you for taking the time out of her busy day to come and share pearls of wisdom and clothes with us.

At the end of a busy day, it was time to realx in Waiora Spa along with the odd glass of wine.  Looks blistful girls.
A copy of our amazing menu and (below) the scallops and prawn entree was simply devine even tasted better than it looked (if that was possible)

The conference room at WaiOra Spa where the Saturday conference was held.

Sunday, we held a quick meeting at the Rotorua Trust building where Alexis (Northern Regional Representative on NAC) told us about the problems and solutions that the National Committee have to face in 2013/2014.

We then had Kay Lindsay (Professional Administrator of the Year 2012) speak on her life experiences and how she came to be the PA of the year.  It was truly an inspirational speech as Kay shared all her lifes challenges with us.  Her advice - be honest with yourself; the future is going to happen so take it by the hand and turn fears into opportunities.

At the end of the morning we headed to Skyline Skyrides for a curry lunch and luge - it was a shame that the rain decided to arrive and only two or three brave souls managed to ride the luge.  A very well organised and rewarding Bays Gathering and thank you to the ladies from Hamilton & Tauranga who came to join us - it's always great to share these special times with special people.

Calling all administrators and their managers!

Waiariki Institute of Technology’s

School of Business & Tourism offer

The Diploma in Business Administration – Level 5 online

The Diploma in Business Administration has been specifically designed for all administrative professionals – from receptionist through to office manager and every administration-type position in between.

It is completely taught and learnt online (via the internet) and it is also workplace based.  There are no structured classes to attend.  This means that you are able to study using your own work as the basis for your assessment work and in a time that suits the organisation and yourself.  Our courses are designed with you in mind and the learning is flexible enough to encompass what you do now plus it gives you huge scope into higher learning opportunities.

You require a minimum of eight courses to complete the diploma which can be achieved in two years - studying four courses each year (two each semester) or take longer if you prefer to study one course at a time.

Rotorua Community Leadership Awards . . .

The inaugural Rotorua Community Leadership Awards, were held recently in conjunction with the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Trust, the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust, the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and The Daily Post.

The awards presented to the 16 leaders in the Rotorua community covered many areas of achievement, including the performing arts, youth leadership, business, community service, sports and environmental action.

One very surprised recipient of this award was none other than our own Northern Regional Leader - Alexis Lew Gor.  Alexis has worked tirelessly in our ethnic community for many years and is a very worthy recipient.

Alexis - we are very proud of you.  On behalf of AAPNZ - Congratulations and well done!!!!

Below is the article that appeared in the Daily Post.

ALEXIS LEW GOR
Rotorua Community Leadership Award

Alexis LewGor plays an important role in helping new immigrants settle in Rotorua.

Alexis LewGor laughs at the idea she won a leadership award for services to her community but it's her work that has helped many migrants find their way in their new homeland and city.

"I really didn't think what I was doing was leadership," she told The Daily Post.
Mrs LewGor immigrated to New Zealand from Lautoka in Fiji and, after working in the small forestry town of Murupara, she and her husband settled in Rotorua in 1997.

However, it took some time for her to settle in as she dealt with the residency process and she found it difficult to find work, she believes, because of her accent.

"When I moved into Rotorua, I spoke with other migrants that shared their experiences with me.
"We started an ethnic council where a handful of us from all different ethnicities got together to share the experience of settling into our adoptive country," she said.

They decided there would be other newcomers in future who would face the same experiences and obstacles and so they wanted to help.  The group was the first in a long list of projects Mrs LewGor has since undertaken, using the collective experiences of migrants to help newcomers settle into the community and express their cultures.

Over the years she has been heavily involved with the Rotorua Fijian Association, the Rotorua Newcomers Network, the Rotorua Multicultural Business Council and the Pacific Island Trust.
"If you have a vision, and the people that you work with have some commonality in it, then by working together and sharing that vision, good results can come of it."

Mrs LewGor became president of the Rotorua Multicultural Council in 2005 and has helped run events that celebrate the city's cultural diversity, including GlobalFest, Polyfest, Whakanuia and U&I; Soccerfest and Can Cook events.

"My role has taught me a lot of things to do with managing people and leading by example."
On top of her community service work, Mrs LewGor is a full-time administrator for the PF Olsen group and balances her professional, community and personal lives.

Margriet Theron, who works with Mrs LewGor on several committees, described her as a strong leader who utilised the advice and skills of her colleagues to help migrants.

"It's a great characteristic of a leader to learn and to accept offerings from various members of her committee," Mrs Theron said.  "She gives people the opportunity to celebrate their own language and customs and culture, while becoming a part of a new community."

The Rotorua Community Leadership Awards, at which Mrs LewGor and others were recognised, were established by Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters, The Daily Post, the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust to celebrate Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week.
