Calling all administrators and their managers!

Waiariki Institute of Technology’s

School of Business & Tourism offer

The Diploma in Business Administration – Level 5 online

The Diploma in Business Administration has been specifically designed for all administrative professionals – from receptionist through to office manager and every administration-type position in between.

It is completely taught and learnt online (via the internet) and it is also workplace based.  There are no structured classes to attend.  This means that you are able to study using your own work as the basis for your assessment work and in a time that suits the organisation and yourself.  Our courses are designed with you in mind and the learning is flexible enough to encompass what you do now plus it gives you huge scope into higher learning opportunities.

You require a minimum of eight courses to complete the diploma which can be achieved in two years - studying four courses each year (two each semester) or take longer if you prefer to study one course at a time.

Courses are available for enrolment in February and July (two semesters a year) – most courses are restricted to one semester delivery only.

Each course is timetabled for a 15 week period but they can be finished earlier if you wish to do so.

Tell your boss about the wonderful opportunity to gain a meaningful qualification while carrying on your day-to-day work.  We work with you so that you gain a qualification so you can achieve that piece of paper which means so much in today’s workplace.

Rotorua Community Leadership Awards . . .

The inaugural Rotorua Community Leadership Awards, were held recently in conjunction with the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Trust, the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust, the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and The Daily Post.

The awards presented to the 16 leaders in the Rotorua community covered many areas of achievement, including the performing arts, youth leadership, business, community service, sports and environmental action.

One very surprised recipient of this award was none other than our own Northern Regional Leader - Alexis Lew Gor.  Alexis has worked tirelessly in our ethnic community for many years and is a very worthy recipient.

Alexis - we are very proud of you.  On behalf of AAPNZ - Congratulations and well done!!!!

Below is the article that appeared in the Daily Post.

Alexis LewGor laughs at the idea she won a leadership award for services to her community but it's her work that has helped many migrants find their way in their new homeland and city.

"I really didn't think what I was doing was leadership," she told The Daily Post.
Mrs LewGor immigrated to New Zealand from Lautoka in Fiji and, after working in the small forestry town of Murupara, she and her husband settled in Rotorua in 1997.

However, it took some time for her to settle in as she dealt with the residency process and she found it difficult to find work, she believes, because of her accent.

"When I moved into Rotorua, I spoke with other migrants that shared their experiences with me.
"We started an ethnic council where a handful of us from all different ethnicities got together to share the experience of settling into our adoptive country," she said.

They decided there would be other newcomers in future who would face the same experiences and obstacles and so they wanted to help.  The group was the first in a long list of projects Mrs LewGor has since undertaken, using the collective experiences of migrants to help newcomers settle into the community and express their cultures.

Over the years she has been heavily involved with the Rotorua Fijian Association, the Rotorua Newcomers Network, the Rotorua Multicultural Business Council and the Pacific Island Trust.
"If you have a vision, and the people that you work with have some commonality in it, then by working together and sharing that vision, good results can come of it."

Mrs LewGor became president of the Rotorua Multicultural Council in 2005 and has helped run events that celebrate the city's cultural diversity, including GlobalFest, Polyfest, Whakanuia and U&I; Soccerfest and Can Cook events.

"My role has taught me a lot of things to do with managing people and leading by example."
On top of her community service work, Mrs LewGor is a full-time administrator for the PF Olsen group and balances her professional, community and personal lives.

Margriet Theron, who works with Mrs LewGor on several committees, described her as a strong leader who utilised the advice and skills of her colleagues to help migrants.

"It's a great characteristic of a leader to learn and to accept offerings from various members of her committee," Mrs Theron said.  "She gives people the opportunity to celebrate their own language and customs and culture, while becoming a part of a new community."

The Rotorua Community Leadership Awards, at which Mrs LewGor and others were recognised, were established by Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters, The Daily Post, the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust to celebrate Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week.

Vivienne Kermode - Committee member AAPNZ Rotorua and senior tutor, Waiariki Institute of Technology

I am Vivienne Kermode, senior tutor in the Business Administration section of the School of Business & Tourism, Waiariki Institute of Technology. I specialise in online and workplace based study for all administrators (in New Zealand) who want to gain the Diploma in Business Administration - Level 5.  The online Diploma is a wonderful way for administrators to study as they can do it within their own workplace and at a time to suit them.  Everything you need is available on line - no extra text books to worry about!
I have been a member of AAPNZ Rotorua for a few years now and fully support all administrators - as I started out in administration when I was 15 and have had numerous jobs leading up to my teaching administration - a subject which I am passionate about. I have held posts as marketing and public relations with AAPNZ and training officer.

In my spare time I like reading, spending time with the family, fly fishing, and enjoying walking in our Redwood forest here in Rotorua where I take my wee (very fat) dog as often as I can as it does us both good to stretch the legs.  If you are reading this then AAPNZ is for you - and a great place for administrators.

Lee-Anne

So I'd like to begin by introducing to you the Rotorua Group.

Lee-Anne Thompson - Group President

Hi. I’m Lee-Anne and GP of the Rotorua Group. I’ve lived in Rotorua all my life and I did my schooling at Rotorua Girls High School and Waiariki Institute of Technology. Ever since the third form I’ve known that my career path was going to be in administration. I did my Pitmans exams in shorthand/typing and found to my surprise that I was actually quite good at it. 110 wpm at 13yrs isn’t bad. Originally it was my plan to become a court stenographer, but we all know plans can change. I’ve worked mainly in the administration field since leaving school and I’ve also worked for ten years in the hospitality industry as well. For the last 16 years I’ve been the Secretary/Office Administrator of the Rotorua Trust. I have a special interest in the Trust’s Scholarship programme and also provide the administration support for the Rotorua Young Achievers programme. I am also completing my Diploma in Business Administration L5 through workplace assessment.

I am married to Colin, we have four adult children, two school age children and two grandchildren.

We also have our own aluminium joinery business which means we both work 6 days a week. When we get a chance we love fishing and camping, travelling and living life to the full.

Trish Dunn - Vice President

I am a wife and mother to three boys who spend much of their energy committing my time to their sporting pursuits and interests. Born and bred in the Forestland of Tokoroa, now residing in Rotorua, it appears I am destined to live in towns of lingering smells! At the age of 19, with my office training and qualifications, I packed my suitcase and ventured to Melbourne with dreams of travel. Those dreams quickly faded when within two weeks of arrival I met a fellow Kiwi (from Rotorua) and together we settled into life in the Australian fast lane.
It was in Melbourne where I discovered an invigorating career as an office temp, gaining knowledge and experience in a wide variety of organisations. Moving to Rotorua and being required to work in full time recruitment was certainly a culture shock to say the least. Once our oldest boys hit High School, I decided to create my own position in the work force and established Infinite Admin Ltd, providing administration support and outsourcing to the small business world. The everyday challenges, variety of work and amazing people in business are what keep my work fresh and exciting.
I am ardent about my family, people and making my contribution toward this world that we live in. I take pleasure in learning new things every day, am eager to see people succeed in their dreams and I am inspired and humbled by those who have a passion for their community.

Anita Galland - AAPNZ Associate, Past Rotorua Group President, Current Committee Member

“You’re never too old to learn” is my motto. Currently Mayoral Secretary running the Office of the Mayor, I have enjoyed a variety of positions from office junior in an accountant’s office to supervising typing pools in government departments. Not only have I gained office administration skills, but also increased my personal growth and knowledge of accountancy, health, wills, roading, policing and community issues.

There’s nothing like the peaceful and yet productive pleasures of gardening and deep sea fishing to soothe one’s mind and I must admit to being hooked on sudoku.

To balance my life I have had a love affair with my husband for the last 38 years (the best to come I say) and enjoy time with our three children and grandchildren.
